Code Editor/IDE

Welcome to our official feedback forum. Do you have an idea? Do you recognize a good idea when you see one? We want to hear from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Please don't translate a permission name of Android.

All Android developers use Permission Name written in English.
But, Delphi localized version, Permission was translated.
I hope Permission Name do not localize.

      • I want to return the compilation dialogue to the old style.

10 seattle's compilation dialog is Flat style.
It's very difficult to see because the item of the plural equals horizontal direction.
The item is placed on the verticalness direction completely, or return the compilation dialogue to the old style.

I would like to see syntax highlighting for *.BAT files the way Notepad+ for example does.

          • Hyperlink functionality in the IDE source code editor

What do you think about the idea of implementing cross reference hyperlink functionality inside the Delphi source code editor? For example you could write a comment like this:

            // [[IdentifierXY]]

Any 1-line text inside a comment surrounded by double square brackets will be recognized as a clickable hyperlink.

So when IdentifierXY is the name of a METHOD inside the current unit or current project, double-clicking on IdentifierXY would JUMP to the implementation of IdentifierXY!

Likewise, when IdentifierXY is the name of a VARIABLE inside the current unit or current project, double-clicking on IdentifierXY would JUMP to the declaration of IdentifierXY!

            It…

            • Split Editor (two or more files visible at once)

Delphi can open an additional floating editor window. But this window always hides other stuff and doesn't stay at its placing while debugging the application. I'd like this editor window to be dockable next to the main editor as it is possible in most other IDEs I know.

              • DUnit IDE integration for failed tests - jump to source line of failed test

when a test fails, double-clicking the test in the GUITestRunner result window should open the source unit of the failed test and jump to the first line of the test procedure

                • FastMM4 IDE integration - go to source line for memory leak

If FastMM4 creates a detailed memory leak log file, the IDE should offer a GUI which allows to jump to the source locations where the leak has been created.

                  • Hudson / Jenkins CI IDE integration (build status)

Hudson / Jenkins open source CI frameworks offer a remote monitoring API which allows to control the status of a build, and submitting new build jobs. The IDE could display the build status for a Delphi build on the CI server in the workspace to give a faster feedback about broken builds.

                    • Add IDE option to run projects unit tests on save

If this option is enabled, then whenever I save the source files, the IDE will compiles the asssociated unit tests (just a project in the same folder or project group). This happens in the background so I do not have to switch projects. The result (number of failures) will be displayed in the workspace.

p.s. this is not my own idea but taken from a book about legacy code maintenance

                      • Code completion allow more flowing typing

For the last year, I'm using both Delphi and VS2010. One thing that's really nice in VS is the fact that you doesn't need to press [Enter] to finish an word. Example: you have procedures CreateMonster and CreateWingedMonster. You do CreateW[ctrl-space], CreateWingedMonster is selected and if you press[space] or the start parenthesis the code is completed. In Delphi (2010 at least) you have to press [Enter], breaking the flow of typing.

                        • Surround with block language elements

I've found it in cnwizards. But it will be really nice to have them natively build in.

                          try..finally..end

                              • Additional support for automatic refactorings

Take a look at http://www.refactoring.com/catalog/index.html. At least a dozen of these could be added to the existing refactoring support in Delphi.
Ones that are fairly straight forward:
                                Encapsulate Field
                                Extract Subclass
                                Inline Class
                                Inline Method
                                Introduce Parameter Object
                                Replace Parameter with Explicit Methods
                                Replace Temp with Query
                                Reverse Conditional
                                Split Temporary Variable
                                Replace Method with Method Object

I've seen most of these implemented by third parties in either Delphi or another IDE so there is no doubt they are feasible.

                                • Help for mouse users: extend selection word-by-word

Please provide "select-and-extend-word-by-word" (strictly, element-by-element) via the mouse, like you can already do via Ctrl+Shift+RightArrow. This would be invoked by double-click-and-hold-then-drag, which currently does nothing.

Note: this new feature does not affect any existing functionality - those who don't want it won't even notice it. Those who do will appreciate it.

Note that element-by-element selection via the mouse is already available in every other code editor I can find, every word processor, every text box on a web page, the Delphi Prism code editor in VS, and even Delphi's own TEdit.

                                  • Help for mouse users: 'Cursor beyond EOL' option

Please provide an 'Cursor beyond EOL' checkbox in the Editor Options box. It should default to CHECKED to maintain existing functionality. But when unchecked, clicking anywhere past the end of the line will place the cursor at the end of the existing text (ready to add more), rather than where the mouse was clicked.

This behaviour is familiar to VS users. Note: this would be an OPTION - if you don't want it, simply leave the checkbox alone.

                                    • Evaluate dialog / Debug inspector : Show real instance type

Currently, the Evaluate dialog "Inspect" option shows a dialog with only the instance-members as specified by the type of the variable. Often, the variable only tells half the story, as the instance could be of a sub-class. Delphi should analyse the actual ClassType, and populate the dialog with those members.

                                      • Show type in Object Inspector

Currently, the Object Inspector doesn't show the type of properties.

There could be a third column
                                        [name,value,type]

Or the type could be shown in a statusbar of the object inspector.

                                        • Self-learning intelligent refactoring

Programmers often do massive and repeatable tasks, consisting of:
                                          - some search & replace
                                          - simple refactorings
                                          - simple edit actions
                                          - navigations
Will be nice, if IDE will be able to recognize such editing patterns, parameterize them and suggest them to the users. That may radically simplify tasks, like a:
                                          - migration from one library to another
                                          - massive refactorings of an application
                                          - etc
