What features would you most like to see in Delphi?

The feature I'd most like to see in Delphi is....

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Change dfm encoding to UTF8

    Change dfm encoding to UTF8 and save cyrillic string naturally not like '#1090#1077#1089#1090' witch means 'тест'. Now it's impossible to search/replace/merge files witch contains cyrillic characters.

    • Change dfm format to xml/json

      Change the current format of dfm file to xml/json. This will improve dramatically search and replace capabilities from external tools and will also bring possibilities for program manipulation of dfm files (because of standard xml/json parser).

      • Custom Attribute Scope Definitions (Restrictions)

        A custom attribute currently can be used almost everywhere in the source code.
        Java offers a method to restrict an attribute (called annotation in Java) to a certain set of code types, like fields, methods, parameters or constructors etc.

              • Hyperlinks inside the Delphi source code

                It would be very useful having special comments inside the source code which work as hyperlinks. Examples:

                // delphi://MyProcedure

                When clicked would jump to the implementation of MyProcedure inside the same unit.

                // delphi://MyUnit.MyProcedure

                When clicked would jump to the implementation of MyProcedure inside the MyUnit unit (inside the very same project or project group).

                // delphi://MyUnit

                When clicked would just open the MyUnit unit (inside the very same project or project group).

                // delphi://Lib.MyUnit

                When clicked would just open the MyUnit unit (inside the Library Search Path).

                Etc. etc.

                • Adding a text note to any control - like a VISUAL TODOLIST

                  Often Todo's refer to visual items like a form or a specific control. Now, attaching a note (which could be used as a Todo item or a persistent hint on how to handle a specific control, e.g. inside a team) would certainly be more straightforward and "visual." It could be implemented as a dockable/floating pane which shows the text content of the note when the user selects this (and only this) control.

                  • Have libxml2 and libxslt support

                    With libxml2 and libxslt we can have XML DOM, XML SAX, XML XSD, XSLT, EXSLT support. I would like to see such (perfect in my mind) implementation in XE3 instead of the native Pascal but still crippled in features Adom, OpenXML, SimpleXML, NativeXML, etc.

                    There are some very good open source Delphi binding to start with such as libxml2-pas-2-7-3 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/libxml2-pas/)

                    • Differential pricing based on purchasing power

                      Keep the Delphi product range priced as it is in its traditional markets. Make a special Russian variety of Delphi for sale in former CIS countries. Price this product at realistic prices for that region, but make the Russian version only runnable when it detects an IP address that matches that region and is not in a VM. Do the same for a chinese version only operable in China. Consider the ROI not as the direct sales, but from the value-adding synergy of a large world user base. Also employ a Moscow-based salesman and a Shanghai base salesman to aggressively…

                        • Add ability to assign anonumous event handlers to events

                          Currently Button1.OnClick := procedure(Sender: TObject)
                          begin
                          ...
                          end;

                          is not considered a valid assignment.

                          Fix this.

                              basicly, load dfm dynamic like load a html. it is useful for generating a form......

                              event function binding when loading dynamic dfm is also useful.

                                    • Support for using Visual Studio as the dev environment for Win32 Delphi

                                      I know it sounds traitorous, but being able to use the Visual Studio environment for Win32 Delphi development would be truly awesome.

                                      • A Delphi equivalent to ReSharper

                                        I am stuck with .Net as that's where the jobs are right now and my lifesaver has been ReSharper. A tool that is equivalent to it would be awesome!

                                        • Delphi to have implicit "cast operator" support

                                          So I can write:
                                          my_string_var := some_teditcontrol; // not my_string_var := some_teditcontrol.text;

                                          example2:
                                          my_bool_var := some_tfield_var; // and not: my_bool_var := some_tfield_var.AsBoolean;

                                          Motivation: this would ease out and remove the somewhat clumsy endless textual constructions the poor developer have to write and worse - read.
